Which platform is best for you?
Since 2009, we have set up many clients on various eCommerce platforms, from hosted eCommerce solutions to many different open source shopping carts.
As the online shopping industry has grown significantly, platforms for running your online shopping mall have narrowed down to the four major platforms that are actually worth spending your time researching: WooCommerce from the open source realm, and BigCommerce and Shopify from the hosted eCommerce realm.
Here are a few highlights of what other companies or websites won’t tell you about each platform:
BigCommerce
BigCommerce boasts PCI DSS Level 1 certification, which means it offers state-of-the-art security and server maintenance service. You can rest assured that you won’t be hit with all those hefty penalties and fines associated with not complying with PCI and leaking your customer’s database with or without credit card information.
BigCommerce also lets you focus on running your business instead of draining your time and efforts trying to stay up to date with system updates and such. Users can take advantage of natively supported SEO tools for you to create your own meta tags, title, and URL of each product and page.
However, due to its framework being on a hosted platform, customizing your website with anything other than strictly visual features is very difficult if possible at all.
As a professional service, we can definitely provide options beyond normal customization such as migrating reviews from Magento to BigCommerce, creating custom displays that can show all your products with any tag you specify, and more.
Shopify
Shopify instantly gives you the look and feel of the latest design trends in eCommerce websites. As Shopify goes through a high level review process for all the themes sold on the Shopify Marketplace, you can just enjoy the beautiful design of the eCommerce site for a couple hundred dollars without having to hire expert designers.
This platform is what we most recommend for clients with 30 to 50 products and simple product options or variations.
If you require more than this, you can’t use the shop as the system allows up to 100 total product options. (If your product requires 3 variations with 5 options per variation, it requires a total of 5 x 5 x 5 = 125 options.) Also, customizing the features of the store is almost not available except for visual changes to the design. As Shopify is designed to provide you with the most simple eCommerce management experience possible, it has some annoying restrictions when it comes to customization.
WooCommerce
WooCommerce is by far the best solution for easy customization and flexibility of what it can do. After all, it is a WordPress plugin. It will work well with full customization of your WordPress website, which we can build from scratch with all the best optimization and special coding for an optimal SEO performance.
However, WordPress is not the most secure solution out there, and it will require some expertise to maintain the version updates, which is critical for security purposes.
We strongly recommend this solution for those who wouldn’t mind using hosted payment gateways to process their credit card transactions for the minimal risk of leaking personal identifiable information.
